Well another season is in books. While it seems that all three series were weather challenged and the races we got in seemed to oscillate between feast or famine in terms of wind. Meaning we either had great wind or really light wind. That said I think we can all take pride in the increasing level of interest and participation.
We particularly enjoyed watching the competition and sportsmanship on the cruising side as Bob Bovaird, Tom Mullen, Pete Van Houten, Luke Doiman, Jeff & Lu Ginsburg, Don O'keefe, Warren Schutt and John Palmer all jockeyed for position. Additionally, there were a host of others who crewed for these Skippers all contributing to a fun and successful season.
On the Scot side we have moved in the last 2 years from struggling to put 2 boats on the line to consistently fielding 3-4 boats and now seem poised to move in a place where we can consistently field 4-6 boats on any given Sunday. We have also moved to a place where on any given Sunday any number of folks can win a race. This year we saw Greg Northrop, Bill Kopta, Jon Orr and Matt Orr all win races. Series and Fleet championships were distributed between Greg, Bill and Jon, speaking to the levelness of the field. We now have two club Scot's, both of which have seen frequent use this fall series from a encouragingly broad spectrum of members.
We would be remiss if we didn't show our appreciation to Don O'keefe for steeping up as the Sunfish Fleet Captain and organizing two Sunfish Events. The first event (with 20 people in attendance) suffered from our feast of famine wind issues with way too much wind, but a few hearty soles still managed to brave the winds and have a good time. Tom Mullen is to be congratulated for setting some kind of capsize record at this event. The winds were perfect for the second event, though coming on the heals of "Irene" had a somewhat smaller participation. This proved a great forum to perfect the "Round Robin" format and all participants got in 5 races each!
Finally, we want to give a big "Thank You" to all from the membership who helped out on Race Committee. In the past we have struggled with finding members to serve as Race Committee, this year it was virtually seamless. All of us who race want to acknowledge how important this is to strengthening the entire race program - Thank you.
All in All, We think it's fair to say racing is on the upswing at Candlewood Yacht Club. Sportsmanship, Camaraderie, and the level of competition in all fleets is increasing exponentially, We encourage all of our members to come out and join the fun next season.
Fair Winds, and hope to see everyone on the line next year!
